Detective Comics #591 (October 1988)
“Aborigine!”
Art by Norm Breyfogle
Story by Alan Grant & John WagnerBatman breaks up a drug buy then attends a charity art viewing as Bruce Wayne. During the show, an Australian Aborigine pays a visit to a group of men the Aborigine claims to have stolen a holy relic from his people. Later that night, the Aborigine confronts Kerry Rollo at Rollo Tower, the man whose art collection was the focus of the night’s previous events and the man who paid to have the relic, known as “The Power Bone of Uluru”, taken by any means necessary. When Batman intervenes, Rollo and the old man are knocked out of one the tower’s high rise windows and plummets to the ground. Though Rollo’s body lies crushed on the city’s sidewalk, the Aborigine seems to have disappeared.
This was a comic my dad gave me as a kid and of course I lost it. I just found it again looking around the longboxes at my comic shop. This issue had a real spiritual feel to it. The character of the Aborigine is great. I don’t know if he ever came back, but he should have.
